Western components cost about the same the world over. Asian design teams realize the bulk of their cost advantage by using Taiwanese or Chinese equivalents. But to be able to base a design on a Taiwanese IC you need support on drivers from the Taiwanese IC supplier, and that support in many cases only comes in Chinese.
